THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TRAVELLING AMERICA

DOCUMENTS

You’ll obviously need a passport and your local driving permit or license. It’s worth making color photocopies of these (and all other documents) and keeping one at home with a friend and one with you on your travels, but in a separate place from your original documents. U.S. requirements about visas are in a state of flux. Consult the U.S. Department of State (on the internet at travel.state.gov/visa) for the latest information.
...... Petty street crime in America is seldom an issue. We’ve found that pickpockets, street scams, and the like are over-hyped everywhere in the world. Be careful, but don’t be paranoid. You’re probably more likely to lose your ATM card than have it stolen.
You’ll want a copy of your auto insurance card, in the rare case that you have an auto accident.
...... Bring an ATM card, and two credit cards (preferably of different brands such as a Visa and a MasterCard, rather than two different Visas). If you can’t withdraw emergency cash from at least one of your credit cards, consider bringing two ATM cards. You basically want two cash sources and two different credit cards.
...... You really don’t want to carry too much, so keep it to a minimum. You probably don’t need your frequent flyer cards, just a list of the numbers. Same with a phone calling card.
Finally, a health insurance card, copies of prescriptions, and information about any health issues are wise to carry with you at all times.
